Thank you all for the continued positive feedback on the CB Newsletter. There is always a lot happening during a CMS week. Among the many activities are three CB meetings, two of these are associated with the election of the next CMS Spokesperson. The CB Chat will feature Art@CMS, there will also be a panel discussion on careers in industry.

Draft minutes of the last CB meeting (February 22) were linked to CB Newsletter #2 but not everyone spotted them. They are here: https://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access?contribId=2&sessionId=1&resId=…

We are keen to hear from you. Please contact us at any time at cms-cbchairteam@cern.ch, or by stopping by the CB Office: 40-2-B28. On Skype we are ian.shipsey, claudia-elisabeth.wulz and jorgen.dhondt

Special CB Chat on Monday April 8 at 18:30 Art@ CMS - all members of CMS are invited.

The CB Chat starts at 18:30 as a continuation of the opening plenary session in the Main Auditorium. Michael Hoch, Xavier Cortado and Pete Markowitz will describe Art@CMS. One of the first products of the program, some stunning panels, have just been installed at point 5. At 19:00 the CB Chat moves to Pas Perdus for wine and light refreshments and a chance to meet the artists.

Some thoughts on ART@CMS by Joe Incandela and Ian Shipsey:

Einstein said: “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science.”

Science requires that we continually reassess our place in the cosmos. Where do we come from? Who are we? Where are we going? It changes our perspective. Great art asks these same questions and when we experience it, it changes our perspective, just as science does.

Given this commonality between art and science it’s especially appropriate and exciting when artists make science their subject. Artists show science from a unique perspective that can be more approachable than science head-on.

This is an era of unprecedented global scientific collaborations; a 27 km circumference machine that collides counter-rotating beams of protons at almost light speed; cameras that photograph the resulting collisions, such as CMS, the size of a six story office building containing sense elements that in some cases are the width of a human hair; and the seminal discovery of a Higgs Boson that may explain why atoms and we exist. As never before there is an opportunity for science and art to fuse; to speak of a reassessment of our place in the cosmos that has just occurred, to speak of the mysterious and to make it approachable. The programme Art@CMS attempts this.

Special Open CB meeting on Tuesday April 9 18:00-20:00

An opportunity to hear the three candidates for spokesperson of CMS, Juan Alcaraz, Tiziano Camporesi, and Roberto Tenchini, who will describe their visions for the Collaboration, and to engage in discussion with them. This is an open CB meeting. All members of CMS are encouraged to attend and participate live or by Vidyo.

Election of the Spokesperson of CMS: a Special Closed Session of the CB on Wednesday April 10 18:00-20:00

This is the annual session at which in odd years the Spokesperson of CMS and in even years the Chairperson of the CMS CB are elected. The election procedure, which takes 60-90 minutes to execute, is as follows. Each member of the Collaboration Board representing an institution or group of institutions has one vote, to be cast on behalf of their institution(s). There are more than 170 institutions in CMS and about 140 votes. The ballot is secret. Each vote must be cast in person. If a CB member cannot be present a proxy is selected to cast the vote. No person can cast more than one vote. The candidate who has received at least 50% of all cast votes is elected. If no candidate receives this majority, the two candidates with the largest number of votes will participate in a runoff election held in the same closed session. After the results are known the successful candidate gives an acceptance speech. The election is organized by the Election Committee, whose Secretary is Andrzej Charkiewicz. Shortly after the election the result is announced to CMS by e-mail sent by Andrzej. By popular request, and in a break with tradition, we are arranging for the election result and acceptance speech to be recorded. A link to the recording will be included in Andrzej’s e-mail.

Regular meeting of the CB (#88) on Friday April 12 at 13:00 in the Filtration Plant

By popular request, pending CB approval and on a trial basis, the normally closed session will be webcast to CMS in parallel with the usual dedicated password protected Vidyo link for CB Institutional representatives. This will allow everyone to watch the meeting.

Some of the items that will be discussed:

  • ESP: the status of a study of ESP and its evolution
  • Status of a study to develop a proposal to determine authorship of CMS papers
  • A proposal to introduce staggered terms for Level 1 Coordinators similar to the terms of Level 2 conveners of POGs and PAGs. (Level 1 coordinators include, for example, the physics coordinator.)
  • Status of the proposal to introduce a new CMS Subsystem “Beam Radiation, Instrumentation and Luminosity”
  • Results of the Wall of Physics competition. (The Wall of Physics is a large display space at Point 5)
  • Status of the publications, authorship, CMSDAS committees
  • Announcement of the new chairperson and new members of the CMS Thesis Committee
How I got a job in industry – a panel discussion 19:00 Thursday April 11

The CMS CB Career committee was established by the CB to provide resources needed by the members of CMS to further their careers. There will be a panel discussion entitled "How I got a job in industry" at 19:00 in the Filtration Plant on Thursday, April 11. The panel members include physicists currently working in aerospace and defence, energy services, IT, finance, software and services for banks and trading agencies, and hedge and mutual funds.
This panel will focus on people currently employed in Europe; a subsequent panel, during the July CMS week, will focus on those in the United States.
The discussion is linked to the CMS Week Agenda. There will be a vidyo connection.

Annual CMS Week outside CERN

The annual CMS Week outside CERN will be hosted at the main campus of National Taiwan University (NTU) September 9-13, 2013. The website is now live: http://hep1.phys.ntu.edu.tw/cmsweek2013/

Young Scientist Committee

The creation of a Young Scientist committee was approved by the CB in February. The selection of the initial members, organized by the CB team, is about to begin. In this process we will seek help from the representatives of the different CMS regions in the Management Board. This new committee will allow younger researchers to discuss issues relevant to them, with a direct communication line to the CB.

Action at point 5:

The CMS detector is being opened at both ends to give access to its central region. The photo taken on 4/4/2013 shows a top view of the "CMS Plus Side" after the end-caps were moved.

Vernissage at Point 5 Thursday April 11 at 18:15

On Thursday April 11 at 18:15. CB members will travel by bus to Point 5 for an Art@CMS vernissage, which will also be attended by many local citizens of the Pays de Gex and Geneva. There will be an opportunity to see one of the first products of the program, some stunning panels that have just been installed at point 5. Those CB members willing to do so will also have the opportunity to become part of the art itself. Light refreshments will be served. CB members will be back at CERN by about 8:30 p.m.
