The exploitation of the LHC data collected by CMS is continuing successfully, with more than 35 new results presented at the Moriond 2017 conference, most of which used the full 2016 luminosity. These results cover all the research lines of the experiment, from the measurement of the Higgs boson to QCD, top, b-physics sectors and searches of deviations from the standard model.
The analysis of the channels H→ZZ→4 leptons and H→γγ with 36 fb-1 has provided new measurements of total and differential cross sections, in agreement with standard model expectations within current uncertainties. The 4-lepton analysis also provides a new measurement of the Higgs mass of mH = 125.26 ± 0.20 (stat.) ± 0.08 (syst.) GeV, which is more precise than the current world average measurement from Run1. Searches for associated top-Higgs production in final states with multiple leptons have provided direct evidence for the existence of a ttH coupling, with an observed significance of 3.3σ (2.4 expected). The measured signal strength is: μ= 1.5 ± 0.5, consistent with standard model expectations.
The scrutiny of the standard model predictions by CMS includes also the measurement of the angular coefficient P5’ in the flavor-changing neutral current decay B0→K0*μ+μ-. It is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the dimuon system. In a similar study, the LHCb experiment had observed deviations with respect to theoretical predictions. The new precise CMS measurement, while compatible with previous results, is in agreement with those predictions. A first measurement of the top-quark mass with Run2 data, an updated measurement of the ZZ total and differential cross sections with full Run 2 statistics, together with new stringent limits on neutral triple gauge couplings were also presented at Moriond.
Finally, CMS has also released more than 20 direct searches for new physics using the full 2016 data sample, with a special emphasis on signals involving electroweak interactions and on experimentally challenging final states with low missing energy. The search for electro-weakly interacting supersymmetric particles in final states containing multiple leptons, for the first time probes masses beyond 1 TeV. The exotic searches have also provided new stringent limits on dark matter scenarios, new types of quarks, vector bosons, long-lived particles or extra-dimension models predicting new spin-2 particles.
