CMS to improve underground fire-extinguishing system

Members of the CMS Safety and Technical Coordination teams removing the foam outlet

CMS has many different safety systems installed in the underground experimental area. These are designed to protect the detector and all the associated electronics as well as the cavern itself. In case of fire, the last line of defence is the High Expansion Foam System.

ECAL Preshower removed from detector for repairs

The removed ES− disc on the surface.

The first part of the CMS endcap calorimetry, as seen by particles coming from interactions in the centre of the detector, is the "ECAL Preshower" or "ES" for short.

New "Higgs Boson Goose Chase" game unveiled during CMS Week

The "end-game" board of the Higgs Boson Goose Chase game.

Building and operating the CMS Detector is a complicated endeavour! Now, more than 20 years after the detector was conceived, the CMS Bologna group proposes to follow the steps of this challenging project by playing "The Higgs Boson Goose Chase" game, illustrating CMS activities and goals.

HCAL upgrades its photodetectors

The Outer HCAL Readout Module

The central hadron calorimeter (HCAL) of CMS consists of the barrel (HB), the endcap (HE), and the outer (HO) regions. The HO consists of one or two scintillator layers and uses the metal of the magnet system as an absorber.

CMS presents evidence for Higgs decays to fermions

Event recorded by CMS in 2012 at a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. It shows characteristics expected from the decay of the SM Higgs boson to a pair of τ leptons. Such an event is characterised by the production of two forward-going particle jets (green towers), seen here in opposite endcaps. One of the τs decays to a muon (red lines) and neutrinos, while the other τ decays into a charged hadron (blue towers) and a neutrino. Download.

Surveyors measure new CSC layer with photogrammetry

A portable computer running the photogrammetry software

CERN’s surveyors conduct diverse measurements to ensure, for example, accurate positioning of magnets, detectors and other equipment. They do so using techniques such as laser tracking and 3D scanning.
