LHC delivers low-energy collisions to CMS and other experiments

This di-jet event produced from proton-proton collisions was detected in the CMS detector. The green bars represent the energy deposited in the electromagnetic calorimeter and the blue ones represent the energy in the hadron calorimeter. The total energy is approximately 30 GeV in each jet. Click on image for high-resolution version. (Image: Tom McCauley / Tai Sakuma)

CMS is never idle

Before proton collisions take place again at the LHC, the CMS detector has been looking at the result of collisions of cosmic particles high up in the atmosphere. This event display shows the track of a muon that reached the CMS detector 100 m underground and passed through the muon chambers (in red) and the silicon tracker (in yellow). Muons as this one are used to calibrate the detector in advance of proton collisions.

CMS is eager to see the first collisions of the LHC Run2. The recent news that the LHC restart may be delayed because of a hardware issue gives us extra time to prepare for those collisions.

CMS recognizes achievements of young collaborators

The CMS Young Researcher's Prize medal, made out of a piece of the CMS magnet's conductor

Every year, the CMS Young Researcher’s Prize is awarded to CMS members who are less than around eight years into their careers after the completion of their PhD or an equivalent qualification.
